Large Metal Garden Sculptures: Materials
Artmetal designs individualised bespoke made metal garden sculptures both large and small. At Artmetal we have produced a range of Garden sculptures using mild steel; in different finishes incorporating other materials such as glass, wood, stone, copper, and stainless steel.
Large metal garden sculptures can be made in Corten steel which is designed to rust creating a protective layer on itself. Mild steel can be used typically as a cheaper alternative to Corten Steel. Mild Steel can then be galvanised to create a protective coating which can then be treated in a self-oxidising paint finish. See gallery image 26 for an example of this.
Mild steel is a versatile and robust material that can be used to create fabricated or forged sculptures using either flat steel designed and cut to produce 3d structures or solid bars forged into shape by hammering, bending, and twisting. Often, we will combine both methods in our designs or concept artwork. Sculptures are typically galvanised and acid etched producing a naturalised metallic finish sympathetic to forged work or painted in a multitude of options.
Large Metal Garden Sculptures: Finishes
Various interesting finishes can be applied using a range of hand-applied reactive paints producing copper, rust, or bronze finishes maintaining a galvanized or zinc-sprayed protective coating underneath. We are able to achieve intricately painted details to work by our in-house artist and achieve many other hand-painted finishes imitating brass or industrial looks to our sculptural pieces for indoor or outdoor application. Various Hi build vinal paint finishes are also available to match any existing or desired colour scheme with specialist paint mixing available RAL coded paint or popular paint branded colours can be matched. T-washed galvanised mild steel is an acid etch finish producing a naturalised look in contrast to the bright silver new galvanising produced
Large Metal Garden Sculptures: Design
Large metal sculptures are designed in-house by the Barret family Adam, Tom, and Leonie Barrett. We are happy to design from concept ideas directed by the client, through our own artistic process and concept designs or designs inspired directly by nature for example our dandelion, bluebell and thistle sculptures or from something seen in our gallery of works.
Our bespoke individual designs are unique to each client taking consideration of the clients location, measurements, and design preferences. Where forged work is concerned each form created is different from the next the hammering process acts like a fingerprint to the steel no two can be the same.
Our design process will ensure a concept design is agreed upon. Sometimes we may produce sample parts or finishes which are best agreed on visually, depending on the project. This research and development is an important part of agreeing and understanding what will work best and what is possible during the creative process. Sometimes drawings will be sufficient to explain a design, especially where it will have a greater fabricated element to it.
Having the budget outlined from the beginning can be useful to guide the approach taken when designing in order to create the look hoped for in the most time and material-efficient process. A proforma and deposit are made to secure materials.
It is also wonderful to have free reign to design through a more artistic process of experimentation with materials. Through the blacksmith craft. Forming something born out of an experimental process without a definitive design to work from. The process of creating your piece whether from a concept design or an artistically lead process is always a wonderful opportunity to be creative and through exploration further our personal skill and knowledge to produce new and individual pieces.
